Dear Editor,
As of this time, the barangays of Maguikay, Bakilid, Estancia-Ibabao and other areas do not have running water since the morning of Sunday, April 15. This is a very serious incident of inadequate water supply since I came to live in Cebu a few years ago.
I cringed at the fact that this loss of water supply took many hours. It has been more than 24 hours now indeed. Why is this? Where are the Mandaue City officials when the public needs them? Where are they to address this social problem?
This scenario has damaged me psychologically. I cannot sleep Sunday night.
This incident proves that Mandaue City officials including Mayor Jonas Cortes and his city council are inept as public officials like all the other officials of metropolitan and provincial Cebu. This shows that they are very ignorant with regards to social issues.
Mayor Cortes should be thankful that the public is educated. If not, he is bound to experience a riot. Filipino officials may not have a capacity in handling riots and other forms of public disturbances. Filipino officials lack the insights in addressing social issues. Why I say so? Because they are blind.
By not looking into this issue of inadequate water supply, Mayor Cortes and his fellow politicos did not ensure their constituents’ right to access to water. Yeah, they cannot handle all the problems of metropolitan and provincial Cebu but this proves their ineffectiveness and lack of concern as public servants.
Metropolitan Cebu cannot be one of the wonder cities of the world. If it cannot provide adequate water access to its constituents, it should not be. Its beach resorts cannot even provide clean restrooms.
Cebu, such a pity!
