MAHJONG. The Ear has again received a query from a reader about mahjong sessions in a dead man’s wake. The reader said “mourners” in the wake of a neighbor have been playing mahjong where big sums of money are changing hands every night. Three tables are occupied and the sessions last up to the wee hours of dawn. “Is this not illegal gambling?” the reader wanted to know.
PARLOR GAME? Some people call mahjong a “parlor game” which is being held just for fun. “But is it still a parlor game even if the bettings run into thousands of pesos?” asked the reader. “Hapit tanang haya nga akong naadtoan duna gyuy sugal nga mahjong, ok ra ba ni?”
