On the three Pinoy heroes

The news says Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., the principal suspect in the Maguindanao massacre, is preparing to go crazy. Come again, you ask?

* * *

That’s right. The news says he’s getting set to go crazy, according to the lawyer of the massacre victim’s families. He’s got to be a good actor to be convincing.

As a crazy man — “buang” — he probably hopes to get off the hook. But he needs more than a chainsaw to detach him from the hook.

Cebuano Daido Angel, salutes Sir Dodong Gullas for “promoting and preserving Cebuano songs.” Daido, a former GAB official who lives in Manila, does his part in promoting Cebuano songs too. He sings Cebuano songs in nightspots he spends his nights in. “Three bottles are enough to make me sing three songs,” he says.

Speaking of Cebuano songs, another friend Nilo Gonzales Que who works in Makati, often finds himself arguing with his Tagalog workmates regarding the composer of “Kasadya ning Taknaa” which many non-Cebuanos wrongly believe is a composition of a Tagalog who titled it “Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit.”

Nilo says anyone who claims and insists that “Kasadya” is a copy of “Pasko Ay Sumapit” “deserves 10 lashes.” And any non-Cebuano claiming to be the composer of the song is an impostor.

Mrs. Fredeswinda Gallego of Sikatuna St., Cebu City, says she just read this paper’s editorial on three Pinoy heroes who have made a name for themselves and our nation “in the global stage.” She’s referring to Manny Pacquiao, Efren Penaflorida and Muelmar Magallanes.

* * *

Mrs. Gallego says she considers Penaflorida and Magallanes more deserving of the word “hero” because they earned world accolade without thinking of monetary reward.
