Columbariums in our churches

Overheard in a PUJ: "Daghan gyud diay fans si Michael Jackson ... Daghan nanghilak pagkamatay niya." Overheard response: "Bitaw ako diay fan man ko niya labi nang diha pa siya magduwa sa Chicago Bulls. Namatay na diay?"

The news says two gays have been hospitalized for dengue. A US-trained nurse in the room of one of the two patients was heard telling a visitor: "Deng-gay ang sakit."

Heard on tv: "The Philippines keeps breaking many records in the Guinness book ... We broke at least three World records so far." It was a breaking news.

An opposition solon from Mindanao said he was in favor of the revival of the two-party system. "No problem. Basta fair play ang duwa ug basta nia namo ang chairmanship sa tanang committees." Fair play!

UP Prof. Randy David is running for Congress in the district in Pampanga where GMA is said to be running also. David knows he's up against a Goliath — in political strength not in size.

Seriously now ... More and more families are having their dead loved ones cremated. Since the Church (Catholic) forbids the keeping of the ashes at home, the cremated member of the family still has to be buried if the family could not find a columbarium to deposit or commit the ashes (in the urn) in.

Why don't the big churches (Catholic and Protestant) put up columbariums in their premises for the ashes of their cremated parishioners? It could be a self-liquidating project as the spaces would not be used for free. And it will be an added love service to the parishioners — dead and alive.

Some fast-thinking businessmen have capitalized on the growing popularity/acceptance of the cremation of the dead. They have put up luxurious multi-storied columbariums whose prices only the rich could afford. What I'm proposing are parish columbariums priced within the reach of not-so-rich parishioners.

E-mail from Abner Ambas: "Many or most of the rubber stamps of our post offices — like the postmarks — need replacement. The words and numbers could no longer be read. Hilis na sa sobrang paggamit. Just a suggestion."

To Ms. Adeline Retardo of Tubigon, Bohol: We can be read online. Please tell your sister in Chicago to visit www.philstar.com. That's the Philippine Star's website but we're in it. Thanks for your message.
