Plot to kill Leyte town mayor foiled

Mayor Norman Sabdao of San Miguel town in Leyte

TACLOBAN, Philippines — An alleged plot to assassinate Mayor Norman Sabdao of San Miguel town in Leyte and his executive assistant has been foiled by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation.

The NBI arrested Gil Tamayo after he allegedly handed an envelope containing P10,000 in cash to an agent posing as a contract killer in Barangay Sta. Rosa in Barugo town on Aug. 13.

Tamayo, a radio blocktimer and former local government employee, claimed the mayor’s younger brother, Vice Mayor Estanislao Sabdao Jr., was allegedly behind the plot.

Sabdao Jr. denied the allegation, saying he is ready to clear his name.

Charges of attempted murder, direct assault and grave threats have been filed against Tamayo and Sabdao Jr.

Tamayo has posted bail of P160,000 for his temporary liberty.

The NBI said that a family dispute and politics could be the motive for the plot to kill the mayor.

Earlier, barangay officials in San Miguel and members of the Sangguniang Bayan filed a petition asking the Commission on Elections to remove Sabdao Jr. from office.

The petitioners cited loss of confidence in seeking to oust Sabdao Jr., saying they were belittled, humiliated and disrespected by the vice mayor.

Sabdao has reportedly expressed disappointment over the behavior of his brother.
