MANILA, Philippines — A Chinese man wanted for a string of crimes was injured after a reported shootout with police in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig on Monday night.
Zhao Yuzi was collared by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) along 31st Avenue at around 8:30 p.m., Philippine Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) executive director Gilbert Cruz said in a message on Viber.
The police officers were about to serve Zhao a warrant of arrest on charges of other deceits, resistance and disobedience to an agent of a person in authority and unjust vexation when the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun.
He attempted to escape using a sport utility vehicle. An armed encounter ensued as police shot at the suspect’s SUV.
Zhao was captured at the corner of Zamora Circle and the BGC Bus Depot. He was brought to a hospital for treatment.
Cruz said Zhao was involved in the abduction of a Chinese in December 2023. He is facing charge of kidnapping for ransom before the Department of Justice.
Seized from Zhao were two firearms and a grenade.
The PAOCC and the AKG, under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Cosme Abrenica, are investigating how Zhao obtained a handgun and if he has a permit to own and possess a firearm.
Abrenica also wants to know where Zhao is working and where his vehicle is registered.
