MANILA, Philippines — The second day of the transport strike in Metro Manila yesterday was generally peaceful, according to the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO).
“The overall assessment during the first two days was peaceful, with no untoward incidents reported,” NCRPO operations chief Col. Roman Arugay said.
Monday’s transport strike was marred by the placing of nails by unidentified people in front of modern jeepneys along Project 3 in Quezon City, Arugay said.
Police are still investigating the incident, according to NCRPO spokesman Lt. Col. Luisito Andaya Jr.
Metro Manila police chief Maj. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo said a transport crisis was averted with the deployment of personnel and vehicles to assist stranded commuters.
Okubo said 4,374 police officers from five police districts and 200 personnel from the Regional Mobile Force Battalion were deployed in Metro Manila.
He said 548 vehicles were deployed to transport passengers.
In San Juan, Mayor Francis Zamora gave public school principals the discretion to suspend classes during the weeklong jeepney strike.
