OLONGAPO CITY, Philippines — A group of residents of this city criticized the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for building a “substandard” slope protection wall along the river in Barangay West Bajac-Bajac.

Batang Gapo Inc., a civil society group, said portions of the four-year-old project gave way amid heavy rains last week.

Gerardo Cruz, the leader of the group, said the project, which traverses nine barangays, poses danger to residents.

DPWH Zambales district engineer Hercules Manglicmot said he deployed a team to inspect the project.
