MANILA, Philippines — The mayor of Sariaya town in Quezon province has been accused of assaulting five quarry workers.
Mayor Marcelo Gayeta reportedly punched Rolando Eje, Rolando Magpale, Aldrin Rosales, Joel Magadia and Joseph Araja on Saturday.
A report from the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) police said the incident occurred in Barangay Sampaloc 2.
Initial investigation showed Gayeta confronted the workers as they were clearing the road leading to the quarry site.
It was not clear if Gayeta was accompanied by his security escorts during the incident.
The workers sought treatment at the Quezon Medical Center in Lucena City. None of them suffered serious injuries.
Quezon police director Senior Superintendent Osmundo de Guzman said he has yet to know if the workers would file a complaint against Gayeta.
