MANILA, Philippines - The repair and rehabilitation of airports in the cities of Tacloban in Leyte and Roxas in Capiz that were damaged by Super Typhoon Yolanda have been completed, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said yesterday.
CAAP said the rehabilitation of the Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport (DZR) in Tacloban and the Roxas Airport (RXS) amounted to P170.75 million and P3.29 million, respectively.
The state insurance agency Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) released P144.17 million in insurance proceeds for the repair of the airports.
Republic Act 656 mandates the GSIS to handle the insurance of all government properties, assets and interests.
CAAP is responsible for the operation of 82 airports, 42 of which are handling commercial flights.
CAAP insured 22 of its facilities with the GSIS for P9.5 billion under the industrial all risk policy in 2013, less than a month before Yolanda destroyed the Tacloban and Roxas airports.
CAAP paid GSIS the annual premium of P18.97 million.
This year, CAAP included sabotage and terrorism insurance coverage for 69 airport buildings and contents.
