3 men get 2 life jail terms for QC bus heist

Robberies and thefts in Metro Manila have gone down according to police authorities due to its pro-active anti-crime campaign.

MANILA, Philippines - The Quezon City court on Monday sentenced three men to double life term in jail for a robbery inside a passenger bus, which resulted in the deaths of its driver and a school director almost eight years ago.

In a 16-page verdict, Judge Wilfredo Maynigo also ordered Jojo Bacyaan, Ronnie Fernandez, and Ryan Guevarra to pay the families of bus driver Lauro Santos and Renato James Veloso, director of the Quezon National High School, P205,836 each for the crime.

Records showed that that three men got on a JMK bus, driven by Santos, cruising along Edsa-Balintawak area around 11 a.m. May 31, 2007, and announced the stick up.

The three then started taking the mobile phones, cash and other valuables of the bus passengers.

Santos and Veloso refused to give their belongings, prompting the three armed robbers to shoot them.

The three men fled from the area on board a car but were later cornered by policemen who said the suspects were high on drugs when apprehended.
