BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – The militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) is calling for the pullout of US Marines who arrived in Sagay City, Negros Occidental last Wednesday to train Special Action Force (SAF) commandos and members of the allied forces.

The SAF commandos and the allied forces will secure the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministerial meeting in this city.

Bayan-Negros secretary general Christian Tuayon said the US troops might violate the human rights of activists, especially those perceived to be terrorists.

The US troops will stay in Sagay City for 45 days to train members of the 6th SAF Battalion, personnel of the Negros Occidental police office and regional public safety battalion, said Superintendent Marlu Conag, who heads the 6th SAF Battalion.

Aside from anti-insurgency, mission planning and anti-terrorism courses, the participants will be trained to secure the APEC ministerial meeting, which will be held from April 29 to 30.

At least 700 foreign and national delegates are expected to attend the event.

Tuayon expressed belief the US troops are here for some hidden agenda and not only to train SAF and police personnel.

Senior Superintendent  Milko Lirazan, provincial police director, defended the presence of the US troops.

Lirazan said the US military could help ensure peace and order and secure visitors during the APEC activity.
