MANILA, Philippines - An airport policeman is now facing criminal charges after being caught with a gun while trying to get near and take a glimpse of Pope Francis during Thursday night's motorcade in Pasay City.
Corporal Virgilio Perez, a member of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) Police Department, has been slapped with violation of the Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
Initial investigation showed that Perez, 61, tried to cross the Domestic Road in Pasay City to get near the motorcade and see the Pope around 6:30 p.m.
However, he was prevented by a phalanx of policemen who were posted in the area.
Authorities confiscated Perez's backpack which contained his 9mm service firearm, magazine and live bullets.
Police said Perez was not on duty during the time of his arrest.
