BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Some P4.9 million worth of crops were destroyed as floods hit several villages in the southern part of Negros Occidental, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) reported on Monday.
Torrential rains brought by the southwest monsoon caused floods in Bago City and in the towns of Valladolid, Pulupandan, San Enrique and Hinigaran.
The OPA said damage to rice crops was placed at P4.6 million; high-value commercial crops, P217,670 and fisheries, P65,000.
Valladolid incurred the highest amount of damaged crops at P1.26 million, affecting 499 hectares of agricultural land.
Forty-five hectares of crops were destroyed in Hinigaran; 28 in San Enrique; Bago City, 18; and Pulupandan, five hectares.
Last week, floods displaced 7,790 individuals or 2,454 families in Valladolid, Pulupandan and Bago City.
Fourteen villages in Valladolid alone were under water.
In Pulupandan, 260 individuals or 53 families from the villages of Pag-ayon and Ubay were evacuated.
