LUCENA CITY, Philippines – To discourage the use of plastic containers as fuel tanks which pose risks to health and the environment, the city council here recently passed an ordinance prohibiting this.
Councilor William Noche, principal author of the ordinance, said the fumes or “fuel vapor†is bad not only for the health of commuters, but also for the environment.
The ordinance prohibits the use of empty mineral water bottles and other plastic containers as fuel tanks of passenger jeepneys plying city streets.
Violators will be given a one-month reprieve to replace their plastic fuel tanks, after which there’s a P1,000 fine for the first offense, P2,000 for the second, P3,000 for the third, and P5,000 for subsequent offenses, including imprisonment depending on the court’s discretion.
