BATANGAS , Philippines – Former Mataas na Kahoy town mayor Arnulfo Rivera, who was shot dead by an unidentified assailant last week, was buried at the Sanctuario De La Paz Cemetery in Barangay 2 yesterday.
Relatives, friends and supporters in white T-shirts marked with pleas for justice joined the funeral, which was preceded by a ceremony at the Immaculate Conception Parish.
Rivera, 57, had just come from a church in Barangay Calingatan when a lone gunman shot him on June 8.
Witnesses said the gunman escaped on a waiting motorcycle while Rivera was rushed to the Mary Mediatrix Hospital in Lipa City, where he died hours later.
Meanwhile, investigators handling Rivera’s case remain clueless on the incident.
Senior Superintendent Raul Tacaca, head of a task force probing Rivera’s murder, said after the burial that they have yet to gather information from the relatives of the victim.
Rivera served as mayor of Mataas na Kahoy town from 1998 to 2001.
