CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines – A former mayor of Mataas na Kahoy town in Batangas died a few hours after he was shot in his residential compound yesterday morning, authorities said.
The victim, Arnulfo Rivera, who served as Mataas na Kahoy mayor for just one term from 1998 to 2001, died while being treated for a bullet wound in the head at the Mary Mediatrix Hospital, said Senior Inspector Alfredo Lorin, the town’s police chief.
Rivera had just come from the barangay chapel and the gunman followed him in his compound and shot him in the back of the head at around 10 a.m. yesterday, Lorin said.
He said the assailant, clad in casual clothes, boarded a motorcycle driven by his lookout a few meters away from Rivera’s house.
Lorin admitted that investigators were still clueless on the killing. – With Arnell Ozaeta
