Prosecutor dead in ambush in Marawi

COTABATO CITY, Philippines --- Two men riding a motorcycle together shot dead Lanao del Sur assistant provincial prosecutor Simpal Alawi Sr. in Marawi City on Monday.

The victim, who was also a part-time instructor at the law school of the Mindanao State University in Marawi City, was on his way to office on board his vehicle when the suspects overtook the victim's vehicle and opened fire with .45 caliber handguns.

Alawi died instantly from gunshot wounds.

Local police investigators are still clueless on the  identities of the gunmen and their motive for the attack.

Alawi, an ethnic Maranaw, hailed from Madalum town in Lanao del Sur.

Chief Supt. Noel Delos Reyes, director of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) police, said investigators have yet  to determine if the murder of Alawi was work-related or not. - John Unson
