Bukidnon tillers get PCIC checks for Agaton losses

MANILA, Philippines - Farmers in Bukidnon recently received their indemnity claims from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. (PCIC) to cover for the crop losses they incurred when Tropical Depression Agaton struck Mindanao last year.

Julio Celestiano Jr., provincial agrarian reform officer II, said checks amounting to P252,394.77 were distributed to the 27 member-beneficiaries of the PANAW Multipurpose Cooperative in Sumilao town.

“These farmers planted corn during the last cropping season in 2013 when Agaton struck Mindanao in January that year and destroyed their crops,” Celestiano said.

A tie-up between the DAR and the PCIC was earlier forged through the Agrarian Reform Beneficiary Agricultural Insurance Program, allowing the farmers to collect payments in case of losses and damage to their crops and farm animals during natural calamities or fortuitous events.
