Reds raid Agusan mining firm, torch equipment

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines   â€“ More than 100 suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas stormed a mining office and set seven pieces of equipment on fire in Tubay town in Agusan del Norte Saturday.

The armed men, said to belong to NPA Front 21, allegedly disarmed the security guards of Alston Mining Co. in Barangay Tagmamarkay, a report from the Tubay municipal police said.

The rebels reportedly set the office, a backhoe, two bulldozers and four other pieces of equipment on fire.

The gunmen took the service firearms, including shotguns and M-16 rifles, of the security guards as they fled.

Meanwhile in Quezon, at least 30 armed men believed to be NPA rebels harassed a police action center in Lucban town on Sunday.

A report from the town police said the attack, which occurred at around 5:35 a.m. in Barangay Kilib, resulted in a brief firefight between the government forces and the rebels.

No one was reported wounded or killed in the incident, said Quezon police director Senior Superintendent Ronaldo Ylagan.
