Laguna village chief gunned down

LAGUNA, Philippines  â€“ A barangay chairman was shot dead in front of cockpit arena in Barangay Halang, Calamba City on Sunday.

Dante Perez, of Barangay Kamaligan, died on the spot due to several gunshots to the head and body, according to Superintendent Marvin Saro, chief of the city police.

Perez was walking near the Calamba cockpit arena when he was shot by the alleged gunman, Ronaldo Hedreyda, at about 2:20 p.m.

“After hiding for three hours, the gunman was arrested at a checkpoint in Cabuyao town at around 5:30 p.m. of the same day,” Saro said adding Hedreyda was identified by the several witnesses as the one who killed Perez.   

He said the suspect changed clothes to avoid arrest.

“A witness brought by the police officers at the checkpoint was able to identify him,” Saro told The STAR.

He said murder charges against Hedreyda were filed with the city prosecutors’ office.

Saro said they have yet to determine the motive for the killing.
