MANILA, Philippines - Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has joined other lawmakers who are seeking an investigation on the deadly road accident involving a Don Mariano bus that fell off the Skyway in Taguig City last week.
In a statement, Marcos said the Senate probe will assign concerned agencies to work on the condition of the implementation and enforcement of traffic laws.
These agencies will be the Department of Transportation and Communications, Department of Interior and Local Movement, the Philippine National Police and the Metro Manila Development Authority.
The Senator said it was "imperative" for both Congresses to look into the incident “to assess and evaluate†the government's efficiency in addressing safety and security in public transportation.
Concerned agencies were also tasked to inform the Senate about the statistics on the occurrences of accidents "involving common carriers and their peculiar causes and attendant circumstances."
“What is unfortunate is that this kind of senseless death could have been avoided by proper implementation of, or compliance with, basic traffic and transport safety rules,†Marcos said.
About 18 people were killed and several others were injured in last week's Skyway accident.
