MANILA, Philippines - A passenger of the Light Rail Transit 1 (LRT1) gave birth while onboard a northbound train on Wednesday morning.
Lawyer Hernando Cabrera, LRT spokesperson, said the still unidentified woman gave birth to a boy around 6:25 a.m.
The train's next stop was the Doroteo Jose Station when the passenger gave birth, Cabrera added.
The passenger was helped by a female security guard and a nurse, identified as Ma. Cecilia Lopez, who was incidentally inside the same train.
Cabrera said in a radio interview that the passenger and her newborn son are now in good condition.
The incident did not affect the LRT operations, according to Cabrera.
Last year, Cabrera said a total of 14 babies were born in LRT1 from 2000 to 2012.
He said eight were born on the train platform while six were born in a moving train.
He added that their staff usually visit the mothers and their newborn children in the hospitals.
"We usually bring flowers for the mother and token gift of diapers/feeding bottles sa baby," Cabrera said in his Twitter account.
When a Twitter user proposed to Cabrera that babies born in the LRT trains should get lifetime free rides, he responded: "Not good policy, gagawin anakan ang LRT."
