BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) has called on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to reconsider its decision voiding the candidacy of Gov. Luisa Cuaresma, who is running for congresswoman in next year’s elections.
“The Commission on Elections should let Novo Vizcayanos decide their representative. We appeal to its wisdom to put the voice of the people as the paramount consideration over procedural technicalities,” said former police general Thompson Lantion, UNA chairman for Cagayan Valley.
Cuaresma is running against Rep. Carlos Padilla of the Nacionalista Party.
The Comelec, in an en banc resolution, nullified Cuaresma’s candidacy when she failed to sign the poll body’s logbook when she filed her certificate of candidacy.
“Our lawyers now are studying the issue. I think the poll body decided on mere procedural technicalities. I just hope there is no political harassment or short-cut decisions involved here,” said Lantion.
