Moderate quake jolts parts of northern Luzon

MANILA, Philippines - A moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit parts of northern Luzon yesterday but did not cause any damage or injuries, state seismologists said. 

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor occurred at around 11:14 a.m. and was centered 30 kilometers northeast of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.

It was felt at intensity 5 in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, and Intensity 4 in Buguey, Cagayan; Batac, Ilocos Norte; Sinait, Ilocos Sur; and Camiguin Island, Cagayan. 

It was also felt at intensity 3 in Tuguegarao City and Peñablanca, Cagayan, and intensity 2 in Burgos, Ilocos Sur and Baguio City. 

Phivolcs said the quake, which generated a depth of 27 kms, was tectonic in origin. Tectonic pertains to the movement of the earth’s crust. 

Phivolcs said no damage or aftershocks were expected from the tremor. – Helen Flores, Charlie Lagasca
