3 volcanic quakes recorded at Mayon volcano

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines  – At least three volcanic quakes  were recorded during the past 24 hours at Mayon volcano.

“This shows that there are still movements underneath the volcano. But this does not indicate there is magma instrusion although a ground deformation survey conducted last June showed a slight inflation at the northwest sector and at the southwest sector of the volcano,” Alex Baloloy, science research analyst of the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) at the Lignon Hill Observatory here told The STAR.

Moderate emission of white steam plumes drifting west-northwest was also observed.

The crater was visible last night but no glow could be observed.

Phivolcs recorded sulfur dioxide emission rate at  an average of  92 tons per day since July 5.
