Floods hit Cagayan Valley

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya , Philippines – The water level at the Magat Dam along the Ifugao-Isabela border continued to rise amid heavy rains, which also triggered the swelling of Cagayan River, inundating several villages in the region’s northern part since last week.

As of 1 p.m. yesterday, the water level in Magat Dam breached the spilling level at 193.07 meters, prompting authorities to release excess water.

Authorities assured residents that they are releasing waters at a controlled volume so as not to aggravate floods caused by the swelling of the river.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) regional bureau chief Leo Buñag warned fishermen and other owners of sea crafts to refrain from venturing into the sea given the inclement weather.

Civil defense regional director Norma Talosig also advised residents along river banks and mountain slopes to take precautionary measures.
