DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A lawyer here has decided not to file charges against the suspected gunman and mastermind in the attempt on his life last week.
Lawyer Cres Dan Bangoy, immediate past vice president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Davao chapter, was shot as he bent to kiss his eight-year-old son upon arriving home at Bel Air Subdivision in Barangay Sasa.
Bangoy sustained a single bullet wound in the shoulder. He was discharged from the hospital this week.
Sasa police officials asked Bangoy to confront a certain Rogelio Penafiel, 27, and Fabian Ampoloquio, 50, who were identified by a taxi driver as the ones who allegedly shot the lawyer.
Ampoloquio and Penafiel were said to be riding a taxi when they allegedly carried out the slay attempt.
Senior Superintendent Rene Aspera, Davao City police chief, said they had no choice but to release Penafiel and Ampoloquio after Bangoy decided not to file any charges against them.
“It would already be beyond the prescribed period if we keep them detained and no case is filed against them,” Aspera said.
Bangoy reportedly warned the two suspects that he would file charges against them if they would attempt to harm him again.
