DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Davao City is bracing for a massive transport strike today, with 95 percent of local operators and drivers committing to take part in the protest action.
City administrator Wendel Avisado, however, said they have put the necessary contingency measures in place to assist stranded commuters and ensure that the strike will be peaceful.
Transmission-Piston Southern Mindanao spokesman Edil Gonzaga said drivers vowed to stop plying the city’s 48 routes until midnight.
The nationwide strike is part of continued protests against Department of Transportation and Communications orders increasing the license renewal fee by 43 percent and revising the schedule of fines and penalties for traffic and administrative violations. – Edith Regalado
