Ex-Cordillera executive's killing baffles police

BANGUED, Abra – Last Monday’s killing of a former director of the Cordillera Executive Board, one of the transitory bodies for Cordillera autonomy, in Bangued, Abra has baffled authorities, as it has again left a blot in the “improved situation” in the province.

The killing of 62-year-old Nelson Parel occurred just three days after Cordillera authorities promised to President Arroyo an improved peace and order situation in the northern upland province during the National Peace and Order Council meeting at the Mansion House in Baguio City.

Police said Parel was playing solitaire with two friends in the residential compound of one Pedro Bringas when a man shot him with a caliber .45 pistol.   – Artemio Dumlao
