Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Lito Atienza has banned any “unauthorized” construction in wetland areas and the cutting of trees in the forestlands of Boracay Island.
This, as the construction ban on the premier tourist destination was lifted last month by the municipal government.
“Any clearing or tree-cutting activities in forestlands and unauthorized development works in the wetland areas should be dealt with in accordance with existing laws, rules, and regulations,” Atienza directed DENR-Region 6 executive director Lormelyn Claudio.
“This (order) is to stop further deterioration of its pristine environment that has attracted tourists worldwide,” he added.
Atienza also directed Claudio to closely coordinate with all Boracay stakeholders in enforcing the new order and submit regular reports to DENR Undersecretary for Field Operations Eli Quinto. – Katherine Adraneda
