A police officer was shot dead Friday in front of his pleading wife by a drunken policeman at the height of a verbal tussle over a traffic accident in Bacoor, Cavite.
Inspector William Pelicano, assigned as logistics officer of the Las Piñas City police sustained seven gunshot wounds in the body. He died while on his way to the Molino Doctors Hospital in Molino 2, Bacoor.
Police arrested the suspect, PO2 Alfie Madrid, assigned at the Regional Special Action Unit of the National Capital Regional Police Office and his civilian companion, Hermogenes Gagan.
Superintendent Mario Reyes, Bacoor police chief said witnesses, including Pelicano’s wife, Babylyn, pointed to Madrid as the one who shot dead the police officer using a caliber .45 automatic pistol.
However, Reyes said the fatal gun has been missing.
Senior Superintendent John Sosito, Las Piñas City police chief said Pelicano, who is set to retire this year, was fetched by his wife from the police station for them to go home in Bacoor together.
While the couple was on board a passenger jeepney (DAW 422) along Marcos Alvarez St., Molino 3 at about 8:30 p.m. Friday, their vehicle was bumped from behind by a Hi-jet van (GRE 189) driven by Gagan, said Reyes.
According to Reyes, Pelicano, who was in full police uniform got off the vehicle and confronted Gagan and his passenger Madrid and a heated argument ensued.
At the height of the heated exchange, Gagan allegedly handed over his caliber .45 pistol to Madrid and was overheard by witnesses ordering the policemen to open fire at Pelicano.
Upon taking possession of the firearm, Madrid opened fire at Pelicano five times.
When Babylyn shouted at the top of her voice why they were shooting a policeman, Madrid also fired at her twice but only one of the bullet found its mark, on the policeman’s wife’s arm.
Madrid escaped after seeing Pelicano slump in the pavement bleeding.
Pelicano was rushed to the hospital with the help of bystanders but he expired along the way.
