Suspect in slay of former radioman surrenders

LEGAZPI CITY – Two days after he shot former broadcaster Ronaldo Julia on the night of Aug. 15, a former barangay chairman surrendered to the Camarines Sur police for fear of his life, authorities said.

Reports said Efren Barosa, former chairman of Barangay San Isidro in Magarao town, gave himself up after unidentified men fired at his house.

Julia was on his way home on board a motorcycle in Barangay San Isidro in Magarao town when he was shot by at least two men with a .9-mm handgun.

He was rushed to the Mother Seton Hospital about five kilometers away from Magarao town but was declared dead on arrival due to loss of blood.

Julian worked for the Filipinas Broadcasting Network (dzGE) and dzLB in Naga City sometime in 1994.

He later served as an executive assistant at the Magarao municipal government when his brother Nelson became mayor in 2004.

Julia was also the station manager of dzRC here in the 1990s and wrote for the Weekly Informer published by his elder brother Mike.

Mike suspects that his brother’s killing was politically motivated as Barosa is related to the wife of former Magarao mayor Salvador Señar.
