SC ruling on Shariff appealed

An organization of provincial government employees of Shariff Kabunsuan asked the Supreme Court (SC) yesterday to reconsider its July 16 decision voiding the creation of the province.

In a 33-page decision penned by Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, the SC ruled that it is only Congress that can create provinces and cities.

Shariff Kabunsuan was created by an act of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Regional Assembly.

In their seven-page appeal, the provincial employees said they face impending displacement and serious economic dislocation as a consequence of the abolition of Shariff Kabunsuan. – Mike Frialde
