BACOLOD CITY – Two motorcycle-riding men lobbed a grenade at the house of Mayor Jose Montelibano of Silay City early Saturday morning, police said.
No one was reported in the blast as Montelibano and his family were not around when the MK 26 grenade was thrown at their residence at around 2 a.m.
Police said only the Montelibanos’ caretaker and a helper were there.
The explosion damaged the mayor’s vintage Mustang car, a portion of the garage, and windows, police said.
Montelibano, who was in Bacolod during the incident, said the grenade-throwing was meant to sabotage his administration.
The first-term mayor has lately been criticized for ordering the demolition of a wet market in the coastal barangay of Guinhalaran.
He also drew flak for suspending tricycle routes to the newly opened Bacolod-Silay Airport in Barangay Bagtic.
