Gov scores LGUs on illegal fishing

BALANGA CITY – Bataan Gov. Enrique Garcia Jr. has expressed his frustration over the poor performance of the local governments in checking illegal fishing and illegal logging activities in the province.

The fishers adversely affected by unabated illegal fishing have to be morally motivated for the success of the Task Force on Illegal Fishing in restoring the once rich resources of Bataan, Garcia told the Provincial Development Council.

“Everyone should help in stopping at all cost illegal fishing which destroys fish sanctuary and habitat,” Garcia said.

He urged Joey Angeles of the Provincial Legal Office to research and prepare his recommendations amending a certain provision of the Fishery Laws, punishing those illegal fishers caught using improvised dynamite, fine net, cyanide and motorboats and fishing paraphernalia should not be released when caught, likewise, for them to post bail until the case is terminated.

Arrested illegal fishers know how to circumvent the law, but with stiffer penalties, this would be lessened, Garcia said.

“If we can stop illegal fishing, local fishers would earn double and have more income for their families,” Gardia added. – Raffy Viray
