Islamists offer truce on third day of Lebanon battles

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna – A freelance photojournalist was gunned down by two motorcycle-riding men while on his way home in General Mariano Alvarez, Cavite last Monday night, authorities said.

Superintendent Mark Edison Belarma, Region 4-A chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), said the victim, Dodie Nuñez, 37, who contributed photographs to the weekly Katapat community newspaper, was aboard a passenger jeep when he was shot at around 9 p.m.

Nuñez sustained multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

Senior Superintendent Fidel Posadas, Cavite police director, said Nuñez had just visited his girlfriend in General Mariano Alvarez town when he was killed.

Katapat is owned by Archie Gadang, who challenged Ireneo Maliksi in the gubernatorial race. Maliksi won by an overwhelming margin.

Gadang, who ran as an independent, faces a libel suit from Maliksi for publishing allegations of corruption against him. Gadang is out on bail.

Police have yet to establish if Gadang’s killing was related to his work as a freelance photographer. Gadang, according to the CIDG, also served as a police informant in the area. – With Ed Amoroso
