Unmanned checkpoints in Nueva Ecija dismantled

CABANATUAN CITY — The Central Luzon police command has ordered that all unmanned checkpoints in Nueva Ecija be dismantled to prevent unscrupulous people from using them for extortion.

"These checkpoints must be dismantled because there is a possibility that they are being utilized to extort money from people," said Chief Superintendent Quirino de la Torre, Central Luzon police director.

De la Torre said his directive to Senior Superintendent Luisito Palmera, Nueva Ecija police director, is in line with the campaign of Deputy Director General Edgar Aglipay, Philippine National Police chief, against "kotong" (mulcting) policemen.

Since Aug. 23, at least 44 policemen have been apprehended for extortion. Manny Galvez
