"I will be a hypocrite if I say that I am not happy. It is a long way to go and it is good to hear about the announcement," Ebdane told reporters yesterday.
When asked about his plans for the entire police force, Ebdane refused to answer the question, saying he would not want to unnecessarily cause more intrigues within the organization.
Justice Secretary Hernando Perez was more than happy to express support for the incoming PNP chief.
Perez was present yesterday when Ebdane presided over a press conference on the arrest of two more kidnappers of Binondo-based Evelyn Jao, his son Aaron and family driver Rolly Tugado.
Sen. Blas Ople also welcomed President Arroyo’s choice of Ebdane as successor of Director General Leandro Mendoza who retires on March 17 next year.
"This will stop intramurals in the PNP and prepare the force for the greater challenge of reorganization and modernization," Ople said.
Ebdane said he will continue to do his job as chief of the National Anti-Crime Commission (NACC) and PNP deputy director for administration.
"Let us do our job and be united in our efforts," he said.
Ebdane said he was "surprised" when Mrs. Arroyo announced last Thursday that he would succeed Mendoza as PNP chief.
Ebdane said there is no grudge between him and Central Luzon police director Chief Superintendent Reynaldo Berroya, who was reportedly eyeing the top police post. — Christina Mendez, Aurea Calica
