Aklan radio broadcaster slain

ILOILO CITY — Another radio broadcaster has fallen.

The program director of Radio Mindanao Network (RMN) in Kalibo, Aklan was felled by assassins’ bullets the other night.

The victim, Rolando Oreta, was shot four times with caliber .45 pistols in front of the house of one Edgar Retonio in Barangay Bugto, Lezo, Aklan at about 9:45 Wednesday night, according to an initial report reaching the Western Visayas police command at Camp Delgado here.

Witnesses said Oreta’s killers fled on board a motorcycle.

In a statement, the RMN condemned Oreta‘s killing, which came less than a month after another RMN broadcaster, Olym-pio Jalapit of Pagadian City, was murdered.

"We are not yet done mourning the death of Olympio ‘Jun’ Jalapit of RMN-Pagadian, now here’s another one. The senseless killings of Oreta and Jalapit are an affront not only to RMN but another blow to press freedom in our country," the radio network said.

RMN called on the Philippine National Police, particularly the local police commands, to solve the killings of Oreta and Jalapit. Leo Solinap
