MANILA, Philippines - A retired policeman and incumbent barangay councilor was shot dead in Tondo, Manila yesterday morning.

Salvador Legazpi, 54, of Barangay 47 Zone 3, was driving a public utility van (ZNT 843) along Road 10 when one of his passengers – a man described to be of medium build and 5’4” tall – shot him in the head at past 8 a.m. He had been plying the Moriones-Ayala route when he was attacked.

His assailant escaped and remains unidentified. Legazpi, who retired with the rank of Senior Police Officer 1, was left slumped behind the wheel with a gunshot wound in the right temple.

Investigators want to know if Legazpi’s position as president of the Moriones Drivers’ Association had something to do with his murder.

Witnesses said the assailant was armed with a .45 caliber pistol. He was wearing a baseball cap and a black shirt. He alighted from the van and boarded a jeep going to Navotas with five other men.
