Taguig launches ‘urban farm’ project

MANILA, Philippines - The Taguig City government launched yesterday its “urban farm” project, which aims to encourage residents to raise vegetables and fish.

Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano launched the project at the Tipas Elementary School, which hosts a demonstration farm in coordination with the city’s agriculture office. The farm has red and black tilapia and catfish fingerlings being grown in small concrete pens and in large plastic drums.

“The intention of the Taguig City government is to develop five hectares along the shore of the Laguna Lake to become the main urban farm of the city,” said Cayetano.

Cayetano said vegetables being harvested from urban gardens in public schools would be used in the city government’s school nutrition program.
