MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) yesterday proposed the creation of a body to revive Escolta in Manila as a tourism and business hub.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said the proposed Escolta Redevelopment Administration could help revive the area as a transport, tourism, business, and culinary heritage hub with the assistance of the Manila City government.
“This proposal is aimed to remember Escolta not just as a historical footnote but as part of the continuing Philippine economic progress,†said Tolentino.
Earlier, the MMDA offered free rides on its Pasig River ferries to buyers of school supplies in Divisoria who will alight at the Escolta station.
Tolentino said Escolta must be revived as it is where many of the big businesses in Metro Manila such as banks, shops and restaurants have originated.
