‘Healthy palengke’ project launched

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) launched its “healthy palengke” project at the Dagonoy public market in San Andres, Manila yesterday.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said the project is aimed to promote order, cleanliness, and effective solid waste management in public markets.

â€œThe three essential components must be present in order for a market to be healthy: there should be convenience, cleanliness, and security,” he said.

At least 100 MMDA personnel conducted a cleanup operation at the Dagonoy market. Tolentino said the MMDA will put a small materials recovery facility at the market to encourage recycling.

Tolentino said the project will boost the MMDA’s efforts to keep the metropolis clean. He hopes that administrators of Metro Manila’s public markets “will accept the challenge and strengthen their respective cleanliness programs for the health and sanitation of their patrons.”
