Chinese businessman robbed, killed

MANILA, Philippines - A Chinese businessman was robbed and shot dead by two unidentified motorcycle-riding men as he sat in his car, waiting for his driver, in Sta. Mesa, Manila Monday morning.

According to a police report, Leonardo Chua, 62, from Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, was waiting for his driver, Elphie Cuntapay, in his Nissan Patrol parked in front of his brother-in-law’s house along Aliw-iw street at around 7:15 a.m. when two men on a motorcycle approached and took his gold necklace, an expensive wristwatch and P90,000 at gunpoint.

Police Officer 3 Henry Navarro said the victim tried to resist but one of the robbers, a man with a limp, shot him repeatedly before fleeing.

Cuntapay and the victim’s brother-in-law, Eliseo Ylade, took Chua to the Lourdes Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Navarro said the victim’s relatives told police they want the National Bureau of Investigation, not the Manila Police District, to handle the case. The MPD said it will continue with its own probe of the case.
