MANILA, Philippines - An investigator of the Commission on Human Rights was ambushed on his way home in Quezon City Thursday night.
Simplicio Abong, 55, of Barangay Manresa, is currently confined at the Sta. Teresita General Hospital for gunshot wounds.
Abong was making a turn at the corner of Sto. Domingo and Mauban streets at around 6:30 p.m. when a man shot him. He identified his attacker as tricycle driver Jerwin Escalante, 24, also of Barangay Manresa.
Senior Police Officer 1 Jaime Jimena said they have arrested Escalante. Abong’s wife, Nonita, told police her husband and Escalante have filed oral defamation charges against each other following a confrontation.
Nonita said Escalante is the son-in-law of Ofelia Nicolas, who reportedly blamed her for the arrest of one of her daughters, suspected of being a drug pusher.
