Manila, Philippines - A suspected member of the Onad carjacking group was killed in a running gunbattle with policemen in Pasay City Friday night.
Superintendent Jenny Tecson, spokesperson of Southern Police District, said policemen were doing rounds when they chanced upon a stolen red Chevrolet Captiva van (ZLP-132) and white Yamaha motorcycle (1998-PE) along Protacio street about 8:30 p.m. The van was reportedly stolen in Quezon City and had been placed on the police’s flash alarm.
According to Tecson, the police officers approached the car but an armed man on board shot them, Tecson said. The SPD supervises six cities and a town, including Pasay.
Four armed men alighted from the van and ran toward the nearest block, leading to a running gunbattle. The slain suspect was identified as Fortunato Bien Lester Ranoy, 18, whose body is being autopsied at the Rizal Funeral Homes.
Three people were arrested, including Ranoy’s uncle, Mark Anthony Flores, 33. Two of Ranoy’s companions escaped.
Police said they also held Mike Robin Infante, 24; and John Paolo Lao, 21; for allegedly “blocking the police operatives.”
The feet of 36-year-old tricycle driver Ireneo Antolin were hit by stray bullets during the exchange of fire.
Investigators recovered a 12-gauge shotgun, eight shotgun cartridges, a homemade .38 caliber revolver, and two sachets of powder suspected to be shabu.
