Pasay tops waste volume reduction for 2011- MMDA

MANILA, Philippines - Pasay City posted the highest reduction in garbage volume among Metro Manila’s local government units (LGUs) for 2011, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said yesterday.

In a statement sent to The STAR, the MMDA said data on the actual volume of garbage disposed by LGUs as of December 2011 showed that Pasay reduced its garbage volume by 51 percent, followed by Pasig, with a 29-percent decrease; and Navotas with a 10-percent decrease.

According to the data from the MMDA’s Solid Waste Management Office, six LGUs – Pateros, San Juan, Taguig, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela and Marikina – posted increases in garbage volume in 2011.

The MMDA said Marikina, which posted the highest garbage volume reduction in 2010, registered a 73 percent increase last year, the highest in Metro Manila.

Valenzuela posted the lowest increase of two percent. The cities of Parañaque and Las Piñas were excluded since MMDA does not have enough disposal records on them.

The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act requires all LGUs to implement programs to reduce, reuse or recycle their solid waste so only residual waste is brought to sanitary landfills.
