MTRCB launches color-coded rating for TV programs

MANILA, Philippines – The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) will implement starting today a revised and color-coded classification ratings for television programs.

Mary Grace Po Llamanzares, MTRCB chairperson in a statement said the revised classification ratings for television programs was approved by the MTRCB board last Aug. 25 and embodied under Memorandum Circular No. 05-2011.

“As it is, the revised classification ratings for television program will be as follows: General Patronage (G), Parental Guidance (PG), Strong Parental Guidance (SPG), and Disapproved for airing on Television (X)” she said.

She said a color-coded pictogram advisory will be superimposed on the screen throughout the airing of a program, with green for general patronage, blue for parental guidance and red for strong parental guidance.

She said there will also be a simultaneous broadcast of the prescribed 3D animation/motion graphics of the program advisories of G and PG.

“These program advisories are designed to empower parents to exercise caution and vigilance with the viewing habits of their children. It is unfortunate, however, these program advisories have been in place for a long time but the public seems oblivious of their true importance and relevance,” Llamanzares said.
