Caloocan to fine motorists using cell phones while driving

MANILA, Philippines - The Caloocan City council passed last week an ordinance prohibiting motorists from using cell phones and other mobile communication devices while driving, Mayor Enrico Echiverri said yesterday.

He said under Ordinance 0471, violators will be fined P5,000.

“I’m appealing for public cooperation, for by obeying the ordinance they would help save many lives and properties by avoiding road mishaps,” Echiverri said, noting that a number of road accidents involved motorists using their cell phones while driving.

He said the ordinance exempts drivers of ambulances, law enforcement agencies, and fire trucks “because it is part of their duty to coordinate with their offices even when behind the wheel.”

The city government tasked its local public safety and traffic management office, headed by Alfonso Sta. Maria, to strictly enforce the ordinance.
